Is drinking from copper healthy?

You can’t get around them and the wildest stories are told about them: copper bottles and cups. Drinking from them is supposed to be very healthy. Some find this nonsense, but others are true believers. Since we really love beautiful products that are sustainable at the same time, we were instant fans. Of course they look great, but does it actually do anything, drinking from a copper bottle or cup?

For centuries, copper has been known for its benevolent effects. Copper is definitely necessary for maintenance of many of your bodily systems, including the immune and digestive systems and it helps to reduce inflammation. In addition, copper has very potent antibacterial properties and is known to kill yeast and viruses. If bacteria come into contact with the surface of a copper bottle, they die really rapidly.

Supermetal

It sounds like a super metal. So you actually need copper for your bodily systems. However, the intake of large quantities of copper is unhealthy. Luckily, while copper is soluble in water, not many copper ions will leach out from a copper bottle into your water so long as your water is of a standard pH. This means drinking water out of copper won't put you at risk from exposure to too much copper.

Of course it also means that drinking water from a copper water bottle would probably not be a good source of copper to help your bodily functions. But even if it doesn’t help, it won’t hurt, and if you are a firm believer of the health effects of copper, you will find yourself in excellent Ayurvedic company.

More importantly, the antibacterial properties of copper are scientifically proven. When you keep water in a copper bottle, the bacteria will be killed. That must be healthy! Alternatively you would use a plastic bottle or cup. Even if recycled, if you contain water in a plastic bottle, small plastic parts will leach out in the water and eventually in your body. All the more reason to use copper instead of plastic.
